From tackling bacterial infections and scalp inflammation to preventing protein loss and enhancing hair elasticity, researchers are reviewing potential benefits of both oils.
A popular YouTuber claims to have found the formula for happy, healthy hair: Combining the goodness of rosemary oil and coconut oil. Intrigued by the claims made in the video and the success stories mentioned in the comments section, a First Check reader requested us to fact-check the claim.
Rosemary, aka Rosmarinus officinalis, is an aromatic herb, armed with antioxidants, anti-inflammatory compounds, and essential nutrients. Coconut oil, on the other hand, is extracted from coconut kernels and known for its deep conditioning and nourishing qualities.
Some studies suggest that rosemary oil could serve as a remedy for hair loss, while others indicate that coconut oil aids in maintaining a healthy scalp. From management of bacterial infections and scalp inflammation to preventing protein loss from the hair and enhancing hair elasticity, researchers are reviewing the many potential benefits of both oils. However, there are no robust studies yet to demonstrate these benefits in humans.
Dr Nazneen Jahan, a dermatologist and cosmetologist practising in Guwahati, India, underscores the importance of clinical trials to support health assertions. “There is insufficient scientific evidence to support the claims made in the video. It is important to consult a dermatologist if you experience any scalp issues, or before trying any hair growth remedies you come across online,” she maintains.
