The aim is to build a network of healthcare influencers to counteract the spread of health-related misinformation on social media.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has launched a noteworthy initiative to combat health misinformation. Fides aims to build a network of healthcare influencers to counteract the spread of health-related misinformation on social media, thereby supporting the public in making informed, evidence-based decisions about their health.

The initiative is built on two fundamental goals: raising good health content and fighting misinformation. To achieve these objectives, WHO has defined seven key objectives. These objectives include building and growing the online network, facilitating a safe space for the network members, presenting opportunities for coordinated communication efforts, providing content support, debunking false information, offering tools and insights, and capacity building for the network members.

WHO will provide scientific guidance, recommendations, talking points, and visual assets to the influencers, ensuring that they are equipped to effectively communicate health information to their followers. By providing accurate health information and encouraging influencers to share credible sources, the aim is to empower individuals to make informed decisions about their health.

This initiative is particularly important in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, where misinformation has been a significant challenge in public health efforts. Currently, the Fides network includes over 100 healthcare professionals committed to raising good health content and fighting misinformation on social media. The collective reach of these influencers across social media platforms is over 50 million people, providing a significant opportunity to disseminate accurate health information and combat misinformation.

As one of the earliest dedicated initiatives to combat health misinformation, First Check sees immense potential in a global, collaborative venture, led by the WHO, in paving the way for a healthier future.
