A video on Facebook, with over 3 million views, featuring Jagdish Vasudev, popularly known as Sadhguru, claims that almond skin contains carcinogenic chemicals. People should consume almonds only after adequately soaking it in water and then, peeling off its skin.
First Check could not find any research to corroborate the claim that almond skins can cause cancer. We reached out to Dr Prasad Narayanan, Senior Consultant and Director of Medical Oncology, Cytecare Cancer Hospitals, Bengaluru, India, to get a scientific perspective.
“The skin of almonds is rich in fibre due to the presence of polyphenols (a type of plant compound). They also act as protective agents against cardiovascular diseases and cancers,” says the oncologist. Studies show that polyphenols have antioxidant properties that are known to prevent cancer.
The video also mentions that all grains and legumes contain anti-nutrients that are useful in keeping plants safe from bacterial infections and insects. Ruchika Gahlot the Assistant professor of Foods and Nutrition, Swami Keshwanand Rajasthan Agricultural University (SKRAU), India, concurs.
“Plant inhibitors found in almonds can hinder the absorption of essential nutrients in our body. Soaking them in water brings these plant inhibitors to the surface, making it easier to remove them, before consumption,” she says.
