Spirulina high in nutrition

Its unique composition has led NASA to incorporate spirulina into astronauts’ diets to meet their nutritional needs in space.

In recent years, spirulina, a type of blue-green algae, has captivated the attention of health enthusiasts and social media influencers alike. This microscopic marvel is claimed to have an impressive nutritional profile with several health benefits. Even astronauts are supposedly fans of spirulina in space. But is it really the superfood that it is touted to be?

First Check digs into scientific studies and research findings to get the answer, as spirulina increasingly finds its way into the formulation of medicinal foods, functional foods, and nutritional supplements. Evidence shows that spirulina stands out for its exceptional nutrient density. A great protein source, containing all essential amino acids, it is also rich in vitamins, minerals, and beneficial compounds such as carotenoids, phycocyanins, and polyunsaturated fatty acids. This unique composition has led NASA to incorporate spirulina into astronauts’ diets to meet their nutritional needs in space.

Research suggests that spirulina possesses anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer properties, as well as the ability to strengthen the immune system. It has shown promise in supporting patients undergoing cancer treatments. However, spirulina does not “kill” cancer cells as claimed in this video on Instagram

Despite its potential health benefits, spirulina may not be suitable for everyone. For instance, individuals with phenylketonuria, a condition that impairs the body’s ability to break down amino acid phenylalanine (which spirulina is rich in). Further, it’s crucial to source spirulina products from reputable producers to minimise the risk of contamination. The quality and safety of spirulina supplements can vary significantly; due diligence is essential.

While social media platforms are awash with videos extolling the virtues of spirulina, it’s worth underscoring a key fact. Spirulina can be beneficial, but it doesn’t have to be a necessary dietary addition for all. Just because astronauts consume it in space doesn’t mean that it is essential for all of us on earth, where we have access to a variety of nutrient-rich foods.
