Gold nanoparticles have antifungal, antibacterial and anti-ageing benefits. However, those allergic to gold from contact dermatitis need to exercise caution.

“Does Suvarna Bhasma work for the skin?” asked one of our readers. First Check delved into research on the subject to understand the rationale behind the use of nano and colloidal gold particles in traditional medicines, particularly in Ayurveda.

Here’s what we found: Gold nanoparticles (GNPs) have antifungal, antibacterial and anti-ageing benefits, properties that are a treasure trove for the cosmeceutical industry. Studies show that nanoparticles can contribute to repairing damaged skin and improve skin surface and flexibility. The properties associated with gold make it highly potent for treating skin inflammation and damage due to sunburn.

Researchers find that GNPs can help prevent glycation-induced skin ageing. They work to arrest ageing by improving dermal blood circulation as well as by enhancing the elasticity and tightness of the skin. GNPs exert anti-glycation effect on skin collagen.

For the uninitiated, collagen and elastin are two proteins that work to keep your skin looking youthful. Excess sugar (glucose and fructose) in your skin fibres attaches itself to these proteins via a chemical process referred to as glycation. Glycation leads to the formation of advanced glycation end-products (AGEs) that settle on the skin, imparting the appearance of skin ageing such as wrinkles, dryness, and loss of elasticity, among others.

As far as toxicity fears pertaining to GNPs are concerned, studies show that GNPs are non-cytotoxic and do not cause significant harm to the cells. However, those allergic to gold from contact dermatitis may need to exercise caution.

While skincare products may make tall claims about the use of nano and colloidal gold particles, it’s important to consider the percentage of these ingredients. At best, you can hope to gain a more youthful looking skin, or else, you may just burn a hole in your pocket! Remember to reach out to a qualified medical professional in case you experience any side-effects or complications.
