First Check received a fact-check request on our tipline +91 9311223141 from a reader who shared a home remedy for pain relief video. The speaker claims that ear pain can be relieved by putting drops of heated aloe vera gel into the ear.
“Take fresh aloe vera plant, cut it and take the juice out. Heat it slightly over a pan then pour a drop of this into either of the child’s ear. This will provide instant relief,” says the speaker.”This is totally natural, there are no side effects.”
What’s the fact?
Dr. Saurabh Varshney, an Otorhinolaryngologist (ENT) and Head Neck Surgeon at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi, told First Check that such a practice is completely non-scientific and unfounded.
“I in all my years of practice have never heard that you can pour drops of hot aloe vera into the ear which can be reliving,” he said. “I advise you to never try such a practice, it might lead to damage to your inner ear, ear drums, putting anything heated is not recommended, including hot water.”
