FACT CHECK: Can wearing copper bracelets on wrists and ankles really cure joint pain and inflammation? 

The claim sounds convincing, but what do studies and experts actually say?

Wearing copper bracelets or anklets cures joint pain and inflammation by allowing copper to enter the body through the skin.

FACT:
False. Copper does not enter the bloodstream through healthy skin, and research shows copper bracelets do not relieve joint pain or inflammation better than placebo bracelets.

 

A viral Instagram post claims that wearing pure copper jewelry on the wrists and ankles is a “powerful, natural tool for soothing pain and neutralizing inflammation” that can “heal your body from the outside in.”

The post says this works through three mechanisms:

  • “Micro-Absorption”: It claims that “When pure copper rests against your pulse points, your body’s natural heat and trace amounts of sweat dissolve microscopic copper particles.” It further asserts that “These essential minerals are absorbed directly through your skin and into your bloodstream, bypassing the digestive system for fast-acting, targeted relief.”
  • “Putting Out the Fire”: According to the post, absorbed copper becomes part of ceruloplasmin, “a powerful anti-inflammatory enzyme,” and “rushes directly to inflamed joints, neutralizing the enzymes and free radicals that cause deep, aching pain and stiffness.”
  • “Heat Conduction”: The post claims copper “actively draws excess heat and fluid away from swollen areas,” working “like a natural thermal regulator” that pulls the “‘fire’ out of your joints” while boosting blood flow to speed recovery.

Based on these mechanisms, the post concludes that wearing copper bracelets or anklets “reduces swelling and redness,” “eases morning joint stiffness,” and provides “continuous, all-day pain relief,” urging people with joint aches to “let copper do its work.”

The post, shared by the Instagram account organicenforcer, which has more than 820,000 followers, has received over 16,000 likes and has been shared more than 600 times.

Do studies support such claims?

A 2024 review published in Frontiers in Molecular Biosciences examined the link between copper levels in the body and osteoarthritis, a joint disease that causes pain, stiffness and reduced movement.

The study noted that copper levels were often higher than normal in the blood and joint fluid of osteoarthritis patients.

However, the study said copper’s role in the body was not straightforward. Both excess copper and copper deficiency were found to affect joint health, though in different ways.

Too much copper was linked to increased damage and inflammation in cartilage cells, according to the study. At the same time, low copper levels were also found to weaken joint tissue over time.

The study concluded that maintaining a proper balance of copper in the body was important for joint health and that any disruption in this balance, whether too high or too low, could contribute to the onset or progression of osteoarthritis.

Another review published in 2025 in the Journal of Autoimmunity looked at how copper levels in the body relate to rheumatoid arthritis, a chronic autoimmune disease that causes joint pain, swelling and deformity over time.

The study found that copper levels were often higher in the blood of rheumatoid arthritis patients compared to healthy people. As the study noted, “the accumulation of excessive copper ions has been shown to be positively correlated with disease activity and the degree of inflammation in RA.”

The study explained that copper played a double role in the body. In small, balanced amounts, it supported important functions like fighting oxidative damage and maintaining healthy bones and blood vessels.

However, when copper levels rose too high, it triggered harmful effects, including increased inflammation, tissue damage and the growth of abnormal joint tissue that can destroy bone and cartilage.

The study also pointed to a newly discovered process called cuproptosis, a form of cell death caused by excess copper, as a possible contributor to joint damage. The review concluded that maintaining balanced copper levels could help in managing the disease.

Expert insights

Dr Anup Khatri, senior consultant, orthopaedics, Gleneagles Hospital, Parel, Mumbai, dismissed the viral claim, explaining that copper worn on the wrists or ankles could not be absorbed through the skin to relieve pain.

He said intact skin was a very effective barrier and any green mark left behind was “just copper oxidation, not proof of absorption into the blood.”

Dr Khatri added that ceruloplasmin, the protein the post claimed copper could boost, was made by the liver and regulated internally. He said, “Wearing copper does not increase ceruloplasmin or directly deliver it to joints.”

He further said, “Clinical studies and systematic reviews have found no significant difference in pain or inflammation for people wearing copper bracelets vs placebo bracelets.”
