FACT CHECK: Does a German gel regrow joint cartilage without surgery or implants? Here’s what doctors say

CLAIM: A viral Instagram post claims Germany invented a new injectable collagen gel that regrows joint cartilage without surgery, implants, or extended recovery. It says the body’s cells grow into the gel to form healthy cartilage, offering a natural alternative to joint replacement for arthritis, joint pain, and cartilage injuries. 

FACT: Collagen-based hydrogels for cartilage repair do exist, and research in this field is advancing. However, most such treatments still require some form of surgical procedure, involve a recovery period, and are approved only for small, focal cartilage defects and not for treating arthritis or advanced joint degeneration. 

 

An Instagram post shared by biologyexplaining.io, which has over 9.65 lakh followers, claims that Germany has devised a natural gel that aids joint cartilage repair without any implants or surgery. It even says that there is no requirement for any extended recovery.

The post states that “Germany has developed a groundbreaking medical gel that can help repair and regrow damaged joint cartilage—without the need for implants or surgery.” It explains that the injectable treatment works by filling areas of cartilage loss with a collagen-based gel.

“Once in place, the body’s own cells gradually grow into the gel, forming new, healthy cartilage tissue,” the post notes. “Unlike traditional joint replacement or invasive surgery, this approach is minimally invasive and is designed to restore mobility in a more natural way.”

The post further says that researchers believe this innovation could change the future of orthopaedic medicine, offering new hope to people suffering from joint pain, arthritis, or cartilage injuries.

What does the research say?

Scientists are working on special gels, called hydrogels, that may one day help the body repair damaged joint cartilage. These gels are still being studied and are not yet a proven treatment for most people.

A 2023 study published in the journal Nature Communications described a new hydrogel that could help repair damaged cartilage without using transplanted cells. The gel was strong enough to handle repeated pressure inside a joint and did not break even after 28,000 cycles of being compressed and released.

Researchers also found that the gel could change its shape within about 30 seconds at body temperature. This means it could potentially be inserted through a small surgical procedure rather than a large operation.

The gel contained two healing substances that were released one after the other. First, they helped reduce inflammation and protect the injured area. Later, they encouraged the body’s own stem cells to move into the gel and develop into cartilage cells.

Tests in animals showed encouraging results, with the study noting that the approach “may provide a promising solution to address the problem of cartilage regeneration.” However, the researchers also said that the treatment still needs to be tested in larger animals before it can move closer to use in people.

A 2025 review published in the journal Bioactive Materials examined many studies on hydrogels for cartilage repair. Researchers from Iran, Ireland and Germany found that these soft, water-based gels can provide a supportive environment for cells to grow and repair damaged cartilage.

The review also highlighted newer types of hydrogels that are designed to more closely resemble natural cartilage and discussed how biological and physical signals could improve healing. The study concluded, “These innovations can significantly enhance the quality of life for people suffering from cartilage defects and related conditions, paving the way for more successful and biomimetic cartilage tissue engineering approaches.

What the doctors say?

Dr Srisanat Rao, a joint and knee replacement surgeon at Zynova Shalby Hospital, Mumbai, said the claim that the gel requires no surgery at all was not entirely accurate. “It depends on the type of collagen gel. Some treatments can be given as an injection, while others still need a small keyhole (arthroscopic) surgery to place the gel correctly. So, not every collagen gel treatment is injection-only,” he said.

Dr Rao also said recovery time could not be avoided. “Even if the gel is injected, the joint needs time to heal. Most patients need physiotherapy, exercise, and rest for a few weeks or months to get the best results,” he said.

Whether the gel could regenerate real cartilage or not, the evidence was limited, noted Dr Rao. “The gel helps the body repair damaged cartilage by acting as a support for new tissue to grow. However, there is still no strong proof that it can grow back the same healthy, long-lasting cartilage found in a normal joint. More research is still needed,” he said.

Dr Rao added that such treatments were not a substitute for joint replacement in advanced arthritis. “These treatments are mainly meant for small areas of cartilage damage, usually caused by an injury. They are not a proven treatment for advanced arthritis, where the whole joint is damaged. In such cases, joint replacement surgery is still the most effective treatment,” he said.
