Ashwagandha

Height is primarily determined by genetics, and the growth plates in the human body close after adolescence.

If viral videos on YouTube are to be believed, ashwagandha – also known as Withania somnifera, an evergreen shrub used in Ayurvedic medicine – has the ability to increase one’s height. You can see some of the videos (in Hindi) herehere, and here.

Can consuming ashwagandha really make you taller? While several studies have explored the potential health benefits of the popular herb, none have conclusively proven its height-enhancing capabilities. A promising study found that ashwagandha extract had a positive effect on bone density in rats. However, there is no mention of increase in size/height.

Research has established that human height is primarily determined by genetics, and the growth plates in the human body close after adolescence. Popular myths about getting taller by taking certain supplements or herbs have no scientific backing.

While ashwagandha is believed to promote general well-being and help address various health conditions such as Parkinson’s disease, dementia, cancers, sexual disorders and stress-induced diseases, clinical studies are needed to prove the herb’s efficacy.

Don’t fall for ‘tall’ claims. Check for scientific evidence.
